Hundreds of objects in one pile — and the first time I ran out of memory.

Context

A pile of hundreds of distinct three-dimensional objects sits on screen and you find matching pairs, clearing them all before the timer runs out.

The first project where I ran out of memory instead of frames

Loading

Hundreds of unique models live in a single scene here, and this is the project where I first hit the limits of device memory rather than the frame rate.

I solved it by loading through resources on demand instead of holding everything at once. It is not how I would do it today, and it worked.

Smaller but memorable: the interface tabs had to be flicked through by dragging rather than tapped, which took more thought than it looks like it should.

Worth calling out

I built this one end to end — gameplay, menus, progression, shop, skins, tutorial, ads and store builds. These are the parts worth naming.

The pile
  • Object storage and loading for hundreds of distinct models in one scene.
  • Pair matching, the timer, and the flow of a level.
The interface
  • Drag-to-flick tab navigation.
